Double-Hung Windows

Double-hung and single-hung windows are not handed. The difference between a single-hung and a double-hung window is sash operation.

Single-Hung - Only Lower Sash Is Operable
 
Window Sash: Single-hung windows have one single operable lower sash that slides up and down.
Locks: Single-hung window locks are not handed.  They are located on the top of the lower window sash.
Balancers: Two balancers hold the window sash in place and are located on each side of the window sash. Balancers for Single-hung windows are not handed.

Double-Hung Window

Window Sash: Double-hung windows have two operating sash that move up and down allowing for ventilation on the top, bottom or both. Double-hung sash are designated as upper or lower when ordering replacement sash.
Locks: Double-hung window locks are not handed. They are located on the top of the lower window sash.
Balancers: Two balancers hold the window sash in place and connect to the sash with a cord. Balancers may be handed based on the window size. Handing is determined by the side the balance is on viewed from the exterior (outside) of the home. Balancers are located above the upper sash behind the head jamb liner. 
Jamb Liners: 200 Series Perma-Shield Narroline window side jamb liners are handed based on the location of the liner viewed from the exterior. The left-hand side is a one-piece liner, the right side has a right upper and a right lower jamb liner. 

Double-Hung Tilt-Wash Window

Window Sash: Double-hung windows have two operating sash that move up and down allowing for ventilation on the top, bottom or both. Double-hung sash are designated as upper or lower when ordering.
LocksDouble-hung window locks are not handed.  They are located on the top of the lower window sash.
Balancers: 200 Series Tilt-Wash sash have counterbalances or balancers located on each side of the upper and lower sash. 400 Series Tilt-Wash balancers are located in the window side jamb liners. 
Jamb Liners: Side jamb liners are handed left or right based on the location of the liner viewed from the exterior.
